It's Okay If This Summer Doesn't Look Like Everyone Else's

Summer often comes with expectations we don't even realize we're carrying. It can feel like this is the season we're supposed to travel, spend time with friends, say yes to every invitation, and make unforgettable memories. When our reality doesn't match that picture, it's easy to wonder if we're somehow doing summer "wrong."
The Comparison Trap
A quick scroll through social media can make it seem like everyone else is on vacation, celebrating milestones, or constantly surrounded by friends. But social media rarely shows the full picture. We don't see the stress behind the trip, the ordinary days in between, or the challenges someone may be carrying. It's easy to compare your everyday life to someone else's highlight reel.
Your Summer Doesn't Need to Look Like Anyone Else's
Maybe your summer is filled with work instead of travel. Maybe you're saving money, healing from a breakup, adjusting to a new season of life, or simply trying to manage your mental health. None of those experiences make your summer any less meaningful. Different seasons of life call for different priorities, and it's okay if yours looks different from someone else's.
Define What Matters to You
Instead of asking, "What should my summer look like?" try asking, "What would make this season meaningful to me?" For one person, that might be taking a vacation. For another, it could be spending more time with family, picking up a new hobby, getting outside, or simply allowing themselves to rest without guilt. There isn't one right answer.
Small Moments Count
A meaningful summer doesn't have to involve expensive trips or a packed calendar. Sometimes it's found in the quieter moments: an evening walk, trying a new coffee shop, playing pickleball with friends, reading a book outside, or watching the sunset after work. Those moments matter, too.
Focus on Your Values, Not Someone Else's Timeline
Comparison has a way of pulling us away from our own lives. The more we focus on what everyone else is doing, the harder it becomes to notice what's already meaningful on our own. This summer, consider focusing less on creating a season that looks impressive and more on creating one that feels aligned with your values. Your summer doesn't have to be filled with travel, parties, or big milestones to be worthwhile. Whether this season is about growth, healing, rest, connection, or simply getting through one day at a time, it still counts. Instead of asking if your summer looks like everyone else's, ask yourself: Does it feel meaningful to me? That answer is the one that matters most.
